Types of Vitiligo

imagesVitiligo is the condition of the skin in which white patches are formed on it. Vitiligo cannot be prevented and neither can it be cured. Vitiligo may be caused due to the destruction of Melanocytes which is the color forming cells, or due to sunburn, emotional stress or autoimmune disease. The risk of developing Vitiligo is same for all age, gender and light and dark skin color people. 2% of the world’s population suffers from this disorder.

Types Of Vitiligo-

The vitiligo disorder is divided into 2 types-

  • Segmental Vitiligo
  • Non-segmental Vitiligo

Segmental Vitiligo-

Segmental Vitiligo is normally observed to occur in children. In this type of disorder, white patches are formed on one part of the body, such as, face or arm and then it spreads to the whole body gradually. Segmental Vitiligo spreads faster than Non-segmental Vitiligo. People experiencing Segmental Vitiligo also complain of losing the color of their hair, eyelashes and eyebrows. Segmental Vitiligo is not linked to autoimmune diseases. It may progress for about one year before it stops.

Non-Segmental Vitiligo-

This is the most common type of vitiligo observed in people. In this condition, the white patches or depigmentation of skin forms a specific type of pattern or symmetry. The depigmentation may be noticed on both the legs and hands. Non-Segmental Vitiligo can be developed at any age and it usually begins from around eyes, mouth, fingertips, wrist, hands or feet. In this condition, new patches of white color may also be starting to form further more. The person experiences a fast rate of skin color loss which may stop after a certain period of time only to begin again later. The patient goes throughout its life a cycle of start and stop color loss.

Non-segmental Vitiligo can be further divided into following categories.

Focal Vitiligo- In this type of non-segmental vitiligo disorder, the depigmentation of skin is confined in an area.

Generalized Vitiligo-It is the common type of Non-segmental Vitiligo disorder. White patches are widely and randomly scattered on the skin.

Universal Vitiligo- In this type of non-segmental vitiligo disorder, entire skin on the body gets de-pigmented.

Acrofacial Vitiligo- In this type of non-segmental vitiligo disorder, white patches is formed away from the body center like fingers.

Mucosal Vitiligo- In this type of non-segmental vitiligo disorder, the depigmentation of skin occurs only in the mucous membrane such as inside of the nose and mouth.
